Courtenay Cressy painted ‘The Dome’ as it was when Roisin (pronounced Rosheen) and Phil moved to this property in 1994. It was built in the ’70s (at a time when Lund was a haven for conscientious objectors to the Vietnam war) and it was looking pretty sad. Not knowing what to do with it, they sought advice of neighbours, family and friends.
The advice was mixed:
“It’s part of local history.”
“Naah, pull it down and bulldoze it.”
“It’s spooky.”
“Where’s the treasure buried?”
“Too weird!” …and on and on.
Everyone had a different opinion. Roisin and Phil procrastinated. They hoped, maybe, it could be restored enough to become a funky guesthouse.
A friend, who was also a creative artist/carpenter said, “I’m tired of working on square, architecturally planned buildings. If I’m not too busy in the spring I’ll come and have a go at it, as long as I don’t have to do anything square!”
So, spring came and so did Rik Tacoma, the artist/carpenter. He and Phil got to work and the magic began. Rik thoroughly enjoyed himself, lovingly restoring many unique details. He spent six hours putting in a window at a strange angle. He hand-carved window sills, and placed original carvings and glass-work in odd places.
The frame of the old Dome was surprisingly strong. They took out all the rotten boards. Phil found a local man who was salvaging old telephone poles and got a great deal on yellow cedar. A neighbour was putting a road through and offered some fir trees which could be milled and used. Treasures from Phil and Roisin’s old home in Burnaby and stained glass from garage sales became incorporated in the building. An Arbutus tree which had blown down across the road during a winter storm was used for the railings in the loft.
All the right materials showed up at just the right times. The tradespeople magically appeared when it was time to do their work.
Every time it seemed like the work would come to a standstill because of lack of material and/or funds, whatever was needed magically materialized. Hence the name “Sidhe Comhairle,” pronounced ‘Shee Corla,’ which is Irish Gaelic and means “Faerie Wysdom.” Phil and Roisin believed the good faeries had an interest in seeing the old Dome restored.
Both Phil and Roisin come from Ireland originally, where ‘Faerie Circles’ are a common occurance in farmer’s fields. They believe the circular shape of ‘The Dome,’ the natural forest site, and undisturbed evidence of the Coast Salish First Nations people, made this a special place for the faeires.
Since the original settlers in the Lund area were Finns, ‘The Dome’ called for a Sauna. It just happened that Roisin and Phil had a cedar sauna in pieces, waiting to be used.
The bathhouse was built separately and the sauna found a home. The bunkhouse is also a new building.
Phil and Roisin invite you to experience for yourself the magic of “Sidhe Comhairle’s” (pronounced Shee Corla).

Hi Mulan,
You just have to love facebook. We used to be neighbors many years ago living on west 11th (was it??) across from that school. You lived with your sister Sunya and little brother Che, I lived with my sister Rachel and our mom, Sharon and my mom’s boyfriend, Norman . We used to play barbies and have many adventures…I wonder if you remember me?
I remember thinking how interesting your family was with an asian dad and dutch mom, now I am married to a Japanese man so I guess you folks set the standard!
I know this is a crazy question (if you even remember little blond Willow from next door) but when we moved to Lund and left Vancouver my mom sold a beloved family chair to your parents. It was green and had claw feet and was huge. If your parents still have it, tell them I would love to buy it back if they are ever wanting to let it go. I have never forgotten about it, lots of memories and have in fact been scouring antique stores in Vancouver looking for it-thinking it might be back in circulation. I hope that’s not too crazy for you!
I am living in Vancouver, are you? I am a social worker with two kids, 12 and 9, I am also an artist. I would love to find out how you and your family are doing.

A Reiki treatment with Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki Master Phil Russell.
Both Phil and Roisin are Reiki practitioners of the Usui System of Reiki Healing. Phil as a Reiki Master, Roisin at the 2nd Degree level.
Their introduction to Reiki came about as the result of a serious car accident. Boxing Day morning, 1998, they were going shopping in Powell River, hit black ice on the highway and rolled the vehicle twice. Roisin was bruised and shaken, but Phil had serious facial injuries, possible head injuries as well.
After many hours in Powell River hospital he was transported by air ambulance to St. Paul’s hospital in Vancouver for extensive surgery.
The prognosis was for a long recovery with undetermined outcome. He had severe injuries involving one eye, and one side of his face and head, with severed nerves.
After returning home to their community in Lund, B.C. they received a phone call from neighbours asking if Phil would be open to receiving Reiki treatments. Although not at all familiar with Reiki they were touched by the offer and gladly accepted. The Reiki practitioners were Maggi Lindsay and Sally Keays.
Phil had come home from hospital with several medical prescriptions, including some strong pain medication. After the first Reiki treatment, (which took place in their home, two days after his return from hospital) he discontinued all prescribed pain killers. Maggi continued treatments with phenomenal results. He had been unable to open his injured eye. After one of his Reiki treatments it opened wide.
The amazement everyone felt at Phil’s successful and speedy recovery was shared by their medical doctor in Powell River. Their insurance provider, ICBC, was also duly impressed with the $$ amount saved on medical treatments!
Roisin and Phil feel total gratitude to Reiki healing and Maggi, Sally for sharing it with them.
A couple of years later Maggi Lindsay was gathering a group together for Rick Bockner, a visiting Reiki Master from Cortes Island. Phil and Roisin offered their home for the workshop and the Magical Dome to Rick for accommodation. They were initiated into the First Degree of the Usui System of Reiki Healing during this time.
Since then they have been using Reiki for their own healing, offering it to their family, friends, pets, plants etc. They also practice it in the wider community.
In March, 2007, Reiki Master Rick Bockner was again in Powell River. Another gathering was held and Roisin and Phil were initiated in the Second Degree of the Usui System of Reiki Healing at the Magical Dome.
In September 2009 Phil was initiated as a Reiki Master by Rick Bockner of Cortes Island in the Usui Shiki Ryoho tradition.

“When Mama Goes to Work: Devin’s Story” follows Devin, the son of a working mum who parents alone, through his adventures. It’s an exciting life! At daycare he plays with friends from a wide variety of races and nationalities, like Devin himself. His mother is Irish/Jewish/Canadian and his dad Jamaican/Canadian. Spanish language lessons are included there with Ana from Chile. Also from Chile, and part of his extended family, are Paulina, Abuela and Tata, who speak Spanish with him.
His great-auntie takes him to visit First Nations cousins. He travels on two ferry boats to spend time with auntie, cousins, grandma and grandpa in coastal British Columbia while mum flys off in an airplane for work.
Devin cries when mum leaves, but Devin knows,
“Mama always comes back
Mama will always love him
Mama will always be his friend.”
Devin came to stay with us in Lund on the Sunshine Coast for a week when he was three years old. Monthly travel is part of my daughter Triona’s work schedule. It was the longest period she had ever been away from him. We had a wonderful time. He had his teary moments of missing her terribly and wailing that…..
“Mama doesn’t love me,
She’ll never come back,
She doesn’t want to be my friend.”
It broke our hearts, of course. Having parented my own three children for most of their growing years without their father, I am aware of societal and cultural pressures on women who either choose, or find themselves, the lone parent. Mother’s who work to support their family are inclined to feel guilty that their children are missing out on the two-parent stay-at-home traditional mum nuclear family life. In our own family history, this hasn’t been the case for the last four generations of women and children yet it’s still looked on as “normal”.
I wanted Devin to have a story of his life that showed how privileged his lifestyle is.
Originally, this little story was written as a Christmas present for Devin, in a binder with photographs. Hugh Prichard generously agreed to illustrate. I then self-published this book to make it available for others.
